Approximate travel time by car between Newport and New York City is 3 hours; Newport and Boston is 1.5 hours; Newport and Cape Cod is 2 hours; Newport and Providence airport (T.F.Green) is 40 minutes.
By Car to Newport: From points north -- 95 South, to State Highway 4 South (a few miles south of Providence), Highway 4 south merges with Rte. 1 South. Exit off Rte. 1 South to 138 East to Newport. (Note: If coming from points north of Boston try to go around Boston rather than through it, especially during rush hours)
From Cape Cod -- 6 West to 195 West, to 24 South, to 138 East to Newport.
From points west -- 95 North to 138 East to Newport.
By Bus to Newport: From any location (including New York City) take a bus to Providence then change to a Rhode Island Transit Authority (RIPTA) bus from Providence. See walking directions below. Peter Pan Bus Lines is the main long distance bus line that goes between New York City, Providence (Rhode Island), and Boston (Massachusetts). When traveling by bus from NYC or Boston to Providence, be sure to get a ticket to Kennedy Plaza in downtown Providence, not to the Peter Pan Bus Terminal which is just outside of Providence off I-95. If you end up at the Providence Peter Pan Bus Terminal, you will need to catch another Peter Pan bus to Kennedy Plaza in Providence in order to catch the (local) RIPTA bus to Newport.
By ferry between Newport and Providence, Rhode Island: Enjoy stunning views of Narragansett Bay and have a relaxing time on the seasonal ferry between Newport and Providence. Approximate travel time: one hour.
By Train, then bus to Newport: AMTRAK trains run from Boston or NYC to Providence. From Boston to Providence a less expensive train is offered by the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Company (MBTA) from South Station, Boston (cheapest way to travel on public transportation between Boston and Newport). Once in Providence change to Rhode Island Public Transportation Authority (RIPTA) bus for Newport. Get off at the last stop which is the main bus station in downtown Newport. By Air to Providence: The T.F. Green airport outside of Providence, Rhode Island, is the closest airport to Newport. There is no longer a shuttle taxi service between the airport and Newport. Following are various options to go between the airport and Newport using public transportation:
• The most efficient way is using UBER. www.UBER.com Cost is approximately $50 each way.
• A regular taxi to or from the airport is approximately $100.
By Air to Boston using public transportation to the William Gyles Guesthouse: The Logan International Airport services the Boston area. However, you can reach the William Gyles Guesthouse from this airport in a couple of hours by public transportation for under $20.
Using public transportation to get to the William Gyles Guesthouse from Logan International Airport we suggest you take the MBTA Silver Line bus from the airport to Boston’s South Station, then the MBTA Commuter rail
to Providence. Once you arrive in Providence see “By bus to Newport” (above) to complete your journey to the Guesthouse.
Walking directions to 16 Howard Street from Newport Transportation & Visitor Information Center and Marriott Hotel (next door): The Transportation & Visitor Information Center where you will arrive if coming by bus is on America's Cup Avenue in downtown Newport. Keeping the water on your right walk about 1/8 mile to where America's Cup feeds into Memorial Drive. Thames St. will be on the right. Take a right on Thames St. The Red Parrot Restaurant will now be on your left. Continue straight for about 8 blocks along the waterfront to Howard St. (on the left). You will pass a Greek Orthodox Church on the left. See the Patagonia shop on the far corner of Howard St. then take a left (on Howard St.). 16 Howard is the third house on the left - a large blue house with black shutters (takes approximately 20 minutes to walk from the bus station to the guesthouse). The guesthouse entrance is on the right side of the house off the driveway and up a staircase. Do not go to the back of the house where there is an entrance to a private apartment.
If driving: Howard Street is a one-way street going towards the waterfront. If driving you will need to take the next left after reaching Howard onto Pope, then left on Spring, then left on Howard. 16 Howard is the third house from Thames St. on the right. Pull into our driveway when you arrive. Our driveway is a loading zone. Once we check you in, we will direct you to where free street parking is available a few blocks from the guesthouse.
